SYN Festival Edinburgh is a multi-art festival run by Greeks based in Scotland. What drew my attention to it initially was the fact that, even though it’s a volunteer-run event, all the donations were given to support refugees that fled to Greece. When in March 2017 I went to the opening of the festival, which was a visual art exhibition at the Out of the Blue, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people that turned up to support the same cause and admire the artworks of 21 emerging artists. Metamorphosis was all about transformation through Greek, Scottish and European mythology, represented in various art forms, from sculpture to painting and photography. My personal favorite was an installation by Tonia Papapetrou, who managed to vividly depict alienation within what appeared to be unified individuals, the blue colour of which couldn’t help but reminding me of refugees and their life-threatening sea odyssey.
